Biography

The room does the work that a set would normally do, and it does it by being ordinary. White sheets, a dark headboard, a wall that stops being interesting a metre behind her. The light is direct and frontal, the kind that flattens shadows and leaves a bright edge on the skin, and it makes the picture look less like a production still than like a photograph taken in someone's bedroom because that was where the light was. That plainness is a style in itself. It asks the viewer to look at a body and a face without the alibi of scenery.
